PILOTS WORK WITH MARITIME HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Canaveral Pilots Association works with the Maritime Studies Program at Rockledge High School in Rockledge, Florida. The Pilots work as part of the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral Education Committee in providing classroom speakers for the program and in setting up field trips for the students, and more recently for administrators and teachers. This past month the committee helped set up a Curriculum Contact Day at Port Canaveral with Brevard Public Schools Career and Technical Education staff for Middle School and High School Assistant Principals. The day included a harbor tour aboard the Space Coast River Tours‘ Blue Dolphin with a pilot and Port Authority Harbormaster as tour guides, and a visit to the the Shipboard Fire-fighting Simulator with Canaveral Fire Rescue. A similar event was also held this month for the teachers of Rockledge High School. The school plans to expand on relationships at Port Canaveral and the maritime industry by re-branding as a Maritime High School. Rockledge High is already well known for offering the Cambridge Program, a Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Academy, a Hospitality and Tourism Academy, and a Chinese language program, and hopes to enhance these programs and the STEM curriculum with opportunities for the students to learn real world applications and experiences. The Canaveral Pilots Association is proud to be involved in this effort and looks forward to working with the teachers and administrators of Rockledge High School. Thank you to the Canaveral Port Authority, Canaveral Fire Rescue, the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral, and Space Coast River Tours for their participation and support of these field trips and the RHS program!
