Congratulations to Capt. Ben Borgie, Co-Chairman of the Canaveral Pilots Association, as he takes the helm as the new President of the Florida Harbor Pilots Association.  The FHPA is comprised of the 11 harbor pilot associations which serve Florida’s 14 deepwater ports.   The organization represents the almost 100 harbor pilots who are members of these associations by helping to educate the public and Florida’s legislators about how pilots serve the public interest by protecting life, the environment, state waters, port resources, and property.  State harbor pilots provide compulsory pilotage as required by state law, by “taking the conn” to direct the movement of vessels entering and departing Florida ports.   These pilots are highly trained, skilled professionals who are local navigational experts of the ports they serve and are experienced in ship-handling and navigating in restricted waters, narrow channels, and congested ports.  For more information visit the FHPA web site: http://floridapilots.com/
