The Canaveral Pilots recently hosted two cadets from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a two week internship. Academy cadets are required to complete an internship with a maritime industry company or organization during their sea training periods. The cadets shadowed Pilots on ship assignments for inbound and outbound transits of the Port; trained with Pilot Boat Captains on pilot boat operations; observed operations of the Canaveral Port Authority, Petchem Towing’s harbor tugs, and Victory Casino Cruises; and learned the business of piloting. The Canaveral Pilots are involved with providing educational opportunities to students of all levels as well as to our local community. In addition to providing internship opportunities when scheduling considerations and Pilot training requirements allow, Pilots also participate in Career Day programs at local schools and serve as guest speakers for community organization events. The Pilots participate with the Florida State Pilots Association in a state mandated Minority Mentoring program, and are currently involved through the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral Education Committee with supporting Rockledge High School’s establishment of a state approved Maritime Industry curriculum. Thank you to all our Port Canaveral partners for your assistance in providing this opportunity for the cadets.
