Canaveral Pilot Capt. Doug Brown was recognized at the 2017 Space Coast Public Service Awards & Hall of Fame Ceremony presented by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on September 23, 2017.  Capt. Brown received a Distinguished Merit Award in honor of his outstanding commitment to the citizens of Brevard County.  On March 11 of this year,  Brown was conning an outbound cruise ship departing Port Canaveral when his actions to avoid two tourists who had fallen off a jet ski in the path of the large ship enabled Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Taner Primmer who was operating a Sheriff port security boat, the time he needed to rescue the tourists.  Capt. Brown is a 1982 graduate of the Maine Maritime Academy and completed a 20 year career at sea in the U.S. Merchant Marine achieving the position of Ship Master before completing the rigorous state testing and training requirements to be appointed to the Canaveral Pilots Association.  He has served with the Canaveral Pilots since 2002.
