Congratulations to Capt. Sean Morrissey on completing two years of the Deputy Pilot Training program and advancing to Level 7. The Board of Pilot Commissioners approved the advancement effective September 1. State Harbor Pilots go through a rigorous and comprehensive training and testing program before becoming fully qualified State Pilots. Candidates for Deputy Pilot positions must first pass a state administered extensive, in-depth exam which includes drawing the nautical charts of the port from memory. A candidate is selected by the Secretary of the Department of Business & Professional Regulation from the top five scores and is appointed to the Deputy Pilot position at which time the 2 1/2 to 3 year training program is begun. Upon completion of the training, the Deputy Pilot then takes the Sate Harbor Pilot exam before receiving the State Pilot license.
