The Canaveral Pilots Association has received word that Capt. Fred Jonassen, “Unit Bravo”, passed away earlier this month at the age of 96. Capt. Jonassen was one of the first two harbor pilots to form the Canaveral Pilots Association alongside his friend and ship mate Fred Dezendorf from Moran Towing out of New York in 1968. Referred to around Port Canaveral as “Big Fred” owing to the fact he towered over “little” Fred Dezendorf, he was a formidable presence owing to both his height and his legendary personality. He retired in 1987 with 19 years of service. He was a survivor of German U-Boat attacks on merchant shipping during World War II. Our condolences to his friends and family.
