NAVAL SEA CADETS LEARN ABOUT PILOTING
The Canaveral Pilots are working with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, Courageous Division based in Cape Canaveral, Florida to introduce the cadets to the profession of Piloting as well as to other career opportunities in the Maritime Industry. Cadets are given a harbor tour of Port Canaveral aboard one of the Association’s Pilot Boats. In addition to learning about the port, different types of ships, Maritime Industry jobs and the duties and responsibilities of Harbor Pilots, the cadets are also briefed about the close relationship between the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Merchant Marine, including the fact that many Merchant Marine Officers are also Naval Reserve Officers. The cadets learn that maintaining a strong U.S. flag Merchant Marine is vital to our economic and national security. One of the highlights of the harbor tour for the cadets is learning about the Pilot Boat and the job of the Pilot Boat Captains in safely embarking and disembarking Pilots from vessels calling at the port.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered non-profit civilian youth organization sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. For more information about the Courageous Division visit http://www.courageousdivision.org/.
