The Canaveral Pilots Association recently held a commemoration of 50 years of service to Port Canaveral.  The Association was founded in 1968 by Captain Fred Dezendorf who was asked by the Canaveral Port Authority to take over the pilotage service at that time.  He brought in Captain Fred Jonassen as his first partner and they later brought in Captain Steve DaCosta as the third pilot.  As the port expanded and the original and following pilots were replaced upon retirement, the association has had 17 pilots.  The newest pilot, “Unit Q”, began his apprenticeship this past September 1.  Current and retired pilots and pilot boat captains gathered to recount the history of the association and to recognize and show appreciation for the relationships with the Canaveral Port Authority, harbor tug companies, shipping agents, terminal operators, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other Port Canaveral partners and stakeholders.
